8 ½ @ Film Forum

Torn between mistress Sandra Milo and wife Anouk Aimée, while caught idea-less on the verge of an ambitious new production, movie director Marcello Mastroianni escapes into childhood memories and sexual fantasies, until, in the course of a climactic ballet around his space-age set, he finally finds his subject. Seamless, seemingly autobiographical interweaving of reality, memory, and dreams, a stylistic breakthrough and an influence on generations of moviemakers — but, of course, according to the maestro himself, “Of all my films, this has the least reference to personal facts…There is nothing in it beyond what can be seen

We’d like to highlight Fritz Lang’s Metropolis

This visionary silent classic from director Fritz Lang created one of the most iconic imaginings of a city of the future while telling a compelling story about the conflict between the classes. When a young activist named Maria tries to enlighten the workers about their oppression, the evil scientist Rotwang replaces her with a robot double designed to foment chaos among the oppressed. Pioneering cinematographer Eugen Schüfftan received the credit for the film’s impressive effects, which include elaborate miniatures of the futuristic city as well as the costume for the robot Maria, one of the most memorable artificial humans in cinematic history.

Playing May 4th @ 11:00am

Real Genius @ Vidiots

Celebrate the legendary career of Val Kilmer with a special screening of Martha Coolidge’s cult comedy Real Genius. Mitch Taylor is the newest boy genius at a facility for the brightest young minds in the world, including Chris Knight (Val Kilmer) – a genius with a potty mouth and an iconoclastic attitude. When the two work together on a laser project, they learn that the government has nefarious plans for their project. But Chris isn’t about to let that happen! One of the best 80s teen movies with tons of ridiculous quotes and one of the most joyously punk rock performances in Kilmer’s career, you won’t want to miss this laugh out loud classic with us on our big screen!

Few actors embodied the sheer range, charisma, and fearless artistry of Val Kilmer. Smolderingly cool legend on screen and a devastatingly brilliant rebel at heart, he was a true force of cinema who captured our hearts from the very beginning. His impact is eternal, and we continue to honor his legacy in our video store and on the big screen.
