Todd Solondz returns to once again shine a light on his beloved New Jersey suburbs, showing us once again that not all is as it seems behind our white picket fences and freshly cut lawns.

Dedicated to the main character of his earlier Welcome to the Dollhouse, Solondz’s audacious third feature follows 13-year-old Aviva Victor (played, over the course of the film, by eight different actresses, including Jennifer Jason Leigh), who longs for a love that always seems to elude her. She runs away from home on a quest that takes her to places she never knew existed, outside her insular world and into the expanses of her heart.

“One of 2004’s best… the perfect abortion movie: kind, scary, fair, and with amazing musical numbers!” – John Waters

Now Playing at IFC Center through the rest of the week, restored beautifully in 4K!

Metrographs Welcome to Suburbia Series

Keeping in theme, Metrograph is offering a selection of cult films and classics that depict the thornier side of American Suburbia.

The Virgin Suicides

Sofia Coppola’s dreamy, melancholic drama tells the story of the five Lisbon sisters, who live under oppressive parental control in a quiet suburban neighborhood. Narrated by a group of boys who obsessively analyze the girls' tragic fates, the film explores themes of isolation, repression, and the inescapable ennui of suburban adolescence.

March 26th @ 7:10

March 27th @ 7:20

Ghost World

Based on Daniel Clowes’ graphic novel, Ghost World follows two cynical, misfit teenagers, Enid and Rebecca, as they navigate life after high school in an uninspiring suburban landscape. While Rebecca tries to conform by getting a job and settling into adult responsibilities, Enid rebels against the monotony of suburban life, drifting into a friendship with an awkward older man, Seymour. The film critiques consumer culture, social alienation, and the disillusionment that comes with realizing adulthood isn’t as fulfilling as expected.

March 26th @ 7:00pm

Drop Dead Gorgeous

A dark satirical comedy set in a small Minnesota town, Drop Dead Gorgeous follows a teen beauty pageant where contestants mysteriously die under suspicious circumstances. The film skewers American pageant culture, class divides, and Midwestern politeness, revealing the desperation lurking beneath the town's wholesome facade.
